Wesley Washington, 6-2 JR SG Santa (Calif.) Mater Dei, is a very good athlete who is effective slashing and in transition. He's shown improvement in his jump shot in the last six months and, with continued development, has a chance to play at the high major level.

We spoke with Wesley yesterday and he told us his three early leaders are Cal, Kansas and Arizona. When we asked if any school stood out in particular, Wesley replied, "Cal -- they're my first choice. I talk with Jamal Sampson all the time and he's always talking about their coaches and how good it is there."

Wesley mentioned coaching, the number of guards on the roster and an oppotunity to play early as key factors in his decision.

When we asked about proximity to home, he replied, "I think everyone wants to be close to home. If everything else is equal, then playing close to home would be a factor." Despite that sentiment, however, hometown school UCLA is probably not in the picture. When we asked Wesley if he had a dream school growing up, he said, "UCLA was the school I always liked, but they don't fit the profile of what I'm looking for."

Wesley doesn't plan on making an early commitment. "I'm going to take a few trips before deciding," he said. "Probably after ths summer."

Wesley told us he's doing fine academically. He said he scored 820 on the PSAT and will take the SAT in March.
