Harrison Schaen, 6-8 JR PF Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, is currently ranked #7 among power forwards in the west. We spoke with his father, Lionel Schaen, this morning and he gave us an update on Harrison's recruitment.
Harrison is receiving mail from a number of schools, including Stanford, Duke, UCLA, USC, Cal, UConn, Yale, Princeton, Colgate, Syracuse, Wichita St. and Texas, among others.
According to Mr. Schaen, Harrison's decision will be affected a great deal by academic considerations. Mr. Schaen said Harrison currently has a GPA around 3.2 and he scored 1280 on the SAT.
We asked if the opportunity to stay close to home would be an issue and Mr. Schaen said, "if it was up to me, he'd go to school across the street." But it's his decision completely."
Mr. Schaen stressed that Harrison's relationship with his coach will be important. "Harrison's very bright and he picks things up quickly," Mr. Schaen said. "He wants someone who can teach the game."
Harrison will probably narrow down his list after the playoffs are over in a month or so. "He'd like to take some trips in June," Mr. Schaen said. "And then make a decision before his senior year."
