New Schools Calling On Holmes

He's back on the market and ready for a big spring. Aaron Holmes of St. Pete Catholic has a new list of schools and big outlook on the upcoming travel season.

"My goal for the summer is to be in the Top 30," said 6-foot-4 shooting guard Aaron Holmes. "I know I can accomplish that goal if I can help my team win some of these tournaments."

Holmes, a scorer out of St. Pete Catholic, wants to be known as a player. It drives him, makes him work hard and earning the recognition is high on his priority list. The one-time North Carolina State – and now wide open – commit from the Class of 2006 is hoping to play well enough to generate some headlines.

Holmes, ranked No. 45 by, de-committed from N.C. State last month. Upon opening it back up, he's learned that even though a few programs were down on him about his initial decision, they weren't mad enough not to call back.

"It was pretty crazy," Holmes said. "Some of the guys that were mad and you never thought they would talk to you again started calling. All the Florida schools have been in touch."

"I've been talking to a lot of guys. I've talked to Wake Forest, Florida, all the Florida schools and UNLV. I've been hearing from Oklahoma State. Count Connecticut among a group that includes Miami and Florida State as well.

As far as Holmes knows, he expects to have Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Memphis and Florida come see him relatively early once the period opens up on Wednesday.

Many wonder just how far from home he'll wind up. The native Floridian claims staying close isn't a concern. "It's not that important. I've been in Florida all my life. It wouldn't be a big deal at all for me to leave. Alonzo Gee got away to Alabama and Abdul Herrera went to Cincinnati. Keaton Grant went to Missouri. They all just went all over."

Holmes says this time around he's going to take his time. He'd definitely like to visit Wake Forest and has been there already on an unofficial.

"They don't lead but that's a school I know I would want to go visit," Holmes said. "I know I can go see all the Florida schools; I'll go unofficially to them and probably Georgia Tech."
