Geoff McDermott Makes Decision

Geoff McDermott made his decision on Monday night and you may be surprised where the 6-foot-6 senior is headed.

It's not often that someone spurns Duke, but that's exactly what New Rochelle High (N.Y.) senior forward Geoff McDermott did when he committed to Providence.

According to a source close to the Friars program, the 6-foot-6, 230-pound McDermott, also a standout on the gridiron, committed to Providence on Monday night.

McDermott was a seldom-used role guy on the Gauchos last summer, but he averaged 19.8 points, 10 boards and 8 assists as a senior at New Rochelle.

Providence assistant Steve Demeo was on McDermott early, but it appeared as though the Blue Devils would have a legitimate shot of landing him when he took a visit to Durham earlier this month.

McDermott was also receiving interest from the likes of Pittsburgh, UConn and Virginia Tech in basketball and he had offers to play football at Syracuse, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

McDermott has a terrific body, is athletic, has leadership skills, is humble, unselfish and plays hard. Add court vision and versatility to the mix and it's a wonder why it took so long for coaches to notice him.

McDermott put up 30 points and 11 boards in a January victory against Texas-bound C.J. Miles and Skyline High.
