"If everything goes as planned he'll sign with Kentucky Friday or Saturday," SLCC coach Norm Parrish said. "The paperwork is actually not here yet."
The Wildcats moved swiftly on Wednesday to get this done. After not offering the prospect during his visit, Tubby Smith swept in and made it happen this week. The coach made the trip to Utah on Wednesday.
"Tubby came out and spent the day here and met with him and offered him and assured me that when he got back in town he'd Fed Ex the stuff," Parrish said. "He's ready to sign."
There had been speculation that the Wildcats would wait out a decision from power forward Uche Echefu (Scout.com No. 34) but apparently UK didn't want to risk losing a player who averaged 18 points and 7 boards last season at Salt Lake.
"They told me he was [coming to offer]," Parrish said. "I can't say it surprised me. Over the course of my years they didn't offer early and then the guys come in and offer later. In reality, everything they said came to fruition."
The decision was a tough one because Texas A&M had done an excellent job recruiting Sims. He visited College Station last weekend.
In the end, Kentucky proved to be tough attractive a school to turn down and once they offered the commitment happened swiftly.
"They obviously have a 3 and 4 spot open with Chuck Hayes gone," Parrish said. "I think Coach Smith made it clear that he's got to really work hard.
"I think even at the next level he'll be very versatile if he gets stronger and puts on weight. He'll be on the perimeter and a low post guy. He's got to put on weight."
