The Butler Is Doing It

McComb (MS) High's Jackie Butler is having one heck of a season. To date, the junior center is averaging a robust 25 points and 17 boards. His high school coach says that many of the nation's elite head coaches have been in town watching him hoop it up.

Butler Draws Impressive Crowd

Life is good for 6-10 junior center Jackie Butler.

Butler is posting huge numbers this year. He's scoring 25 a night and grabbing 17 rebounds, blocking 9 shots and is even distributing to the tune of 5 a game. "He's legit," McComb head coach Hilton Harrell said. "It looks like he's getting better and better every night. He's running the court better. That was the rap on him. He's stronger and much more agile."

Harrell says Butler's biggest night of the year was earlier in the week in the first round of the state playoffs when he scored 35, grabbed 22 rebounds and blocked 5 shots.

Harrell played professionally in the NBA so he knows talent. "He's got the best hands I've ever seen."

As it goes, some of the nation's best programs have seen those hands in action. Head coaches from LSU, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Mississippi, St. John's, Florida, North Carolina, Memphis, Louisville and Texas have seen him in action this year.

McComb has won 25 games in a row leaving Butler in a fight for state player of the year honors. "Al Jefferson and Travis Outlaw, their team's aren't going anywhere," Harrell said. "Jackie doesn't have the supporting cast they do. That shows you how dominant this kid is."
