This past weekend, Tywon Lawson, the nation's top-ranked point guard prospect, visited the North Carolina Tar Heels. The visit, his second of the spring following a trip to Connecticut the weekend prior, seemed to go over well.
"I liked the campus and the coaches," Lawson said. "Hanging with the players was real nice." Lawson said he was able to spend time with the current players and also a few guys who recently declared for the draft.
Now, it appears the Oak Hill floor general has a decision to make. North Carolina is expected to host point guard D.J. Augustin following his trip to Chapel Hill for the Memorial Day Weekend Tournament of Champions. Lawson said UNC would like to know what's on his mind prior to that visit.
"They would like to know probably before D.J. Augustin visits," Lawson said. "I'm cool with that. I'm going to talk with my dad on Tuesday and he's going to call Coach [Williams] on Wednesday."
Lawson understood the ramifications of Augustin's visit since anytime a prospect arrives on campus a commitment is possible.
"I asked the question if D.J. committed before I did what would happen and they said that they'd have to take him because he committed first. I probably have three weeks to think about it."
In the meantime, we know the UConn visit went well. Georgia Tech remains on his list but he's never been on campus and likely won't get a chance in the spring.
"Our school lets out May 21st and I can't take any visits during the summer."
Then there's Wake Forest. He's seen the Deacs campus unofficially but hasn't spoken with Wake since prior to his official visit to Connecticut.
All this means that the last few days of May could be very interesting. Should Lawson commit, you never know what kind of spark that would light under the other top point guard prospects?
