Gators Add a Pair

Billy Donovan and his staff got things done this weekend. The Florida Gators locked up a pair of key in-state standouts.

Billy Donovan and his staff got it done this weekend. They pulled in one of the top big man in the state in the Class of 2006 – and also added another elite prospect from the Class of 2007.

Marreese Speights, a 6-foot-10, 245-pound big man in the Class of 2006 and Gary Clark, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound rising junior at Sarasota Booker (Fla.), committed to Florida this past weekend while playing in a tournament in Gainesville.

``I wanted to get it behind me so I can concentrate on my academics at Hargrave," said Speights, who will spend this upcoming season at prep school for Kevin Keatts. "I felt it was the right thing to do. It's close to home and they've been recruiting me for a while."

Speights, who visited Memphis earlier in the month and also considered Miami and Florida State, is a strong inside presence who played extremely well in April with the Tallahassee Wildcats.

Clark also plays for the Tallahassee Wildcats and will continue to play with Speights – but he'll join the Gators a year later.

``Coach (Billy) Donovan is a great coach," Clark said. ``Their style of play fits my game well and I think I can flourish in their offense."

Clark is an athletic player who can knock down the outside shot and also get to the basket and finish. Clark also fielded an offer from Miami and had interest from N.C. State and Florida State.

``The relationship that I've had with Florida from a young age was important to me," Clark added. "I've known them since I was about nine."
