Lomers Headed to Big 12

This one wasn't all that difficult to figure. Josh Lomers said that proximity was going to a factor from the outset - and the Boerne High (Texas) 7-footer will play his college ball in the state.

It's no surprise that Josh Lomers is staying close to home.

The Boerne High (Texas) 7-foot-1, 255-pound rising senior committed to Baylor on Wednesday morning.

``There's not a better fit for Josh," Boerne coach Stan Leech said. "The staff did an excellent job – as did the other three schools. Baylor had everything – the Big 12, Scott Drew and it's three hours from home."

``We always said we're going to stay in state," Leech added. "He wanted to go somewhere he could walk into and feel the same way he does when he's here. Somewhere he would feel comfortable and not intimidated."

``Staying home was a big issue," added Bill Wenlandt, Lomers' coach at Team Hoop Zone. "At the same time, I think he really took a hard look at Georgia Tech and the history, school and playing in the ACC."

Lomers, who averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks per game last season, also considered Georgia Tech and Colorado. He took visits to all three of the schools over the past month, but at the end of the day, it came down to proximity and comfort.

``He's really developed over the last three years," Wenlandt said. "He's always had the physical size, but he's really come into his own as a player. He's strong offensively and defensively. He's got a jump hook now, a power move and is a presence on the defensive end."
