Hargrave Falls To UNC JVs

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Hargrave is a prep powerhouse. The North Carolina Junior Varsity team is not. On Wednesday, in front of an audience that could decide the coaching future of a North Carolina assistant, the JV team rose to the occasion and knocked off Hargrave, 82-78.

Wojcik's Team Rises To Occasion

There's a big difference between the Hargrave basketball team and North Carolina Junior Varsity. Hargrave's roster is littered with Division I talent; UNC's JV is not. Someone forgot to send the memo to the JV telling them as much.

Trailing by more than 20 points in the second half, UNC's JVs mounted a fierce rally to knock off Hargrave 82-78.

Most of the credit should go to UNC's Jonathan Miller who banged 8 3-pointers en route to a game-high 36 points. Miller caught fire in the second half and was responsible for the key daggers in this one.

However, the sidebar to this win deals with JV coach Doug Wojcik. Wojcik is in the process of interviewing for the head coaching position at West Virginia. He invited the WVU athletic director to come to Chapel Hill and watch him in action and the move proved to be a huge success as his team sprung the major upset.

Mario Boggan scored 22 in the loss for Hargrave and Stanley Asumnu chipped in with 14.

This night belonged to the Tar Heels who obviously dug down deep in a show of respect for their coach and pride in themselves. Chalk this one up as a big win for the junior varsity and an even bigger personal score for Wojcik who along with Ronny Thompson of Georgetown and John Pelphrey of Florida are in contention for the West Virginia position. WVU also plans to interview a number of head coaches and the search centers on Cincinnati head coach and WVU alum Bob Huggins.
