Joe Mazzulla Headed to Big East

Joe Mazzulla is a name that few have heard of outside of the northeast. Now the point guard is headed to the Big East.

Joe Mazzulla is from Rhode Island and was thought to be a virtual lock to play for Jim Baron and URI, but all that changed after a visit to West Virginia this week.

The well-built, somewhat-unknown 6-foot-1, 185-pound rising senior point guard at Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) committed to John Beilein and the Mountaineers.

``Coach Beilein is a great guy and is always straight up with you," Mazzulla said. "They have a great team and have had a lot of success. They have everything."

``West Virginia started with me before they made their run," he added. "I loved it. Everything about it. Everything that Coach Beilein talked about came together in the visit. He had a chance to get Drew Lavender, but he was loyal to me and didn't get him."

``I was also very comfortable with the guys on the team," Mazzulla continued. Mazzulla, a pass-first point guard who averaged 18 points, nine boards and six assists last season, also considered Rhode Island. He's a terrific leader who makes quality decisions and needs to work on the consistency on his perimeter shot.

Mazzulla also received interest from Vanderbilt, Cincinnati and Boston University.
