Curtis Kelly to Big East

Curtis Kelly was listing a bunch of schools just a week or so ago, but obviously one school stuck out - and the Rice High (N.Y.) big man ended his recruitment on Tuesday.

Curtis Kelly always wanted to go far away for college, but the 6-foot-9 rising senior at Rice High (N.Y.) will only have to travel a couple of hours after committing to UConn.

Kelly chose the Huskies over Texas at the end of the day.

``I felt UConn was the best place for me," Kelly said. "Both offensively and defensively. My mother, father and coach also felt that it was the best thing for me."

Kelly gives the Huskies a good start on a Class of 2006 in which Jim Calhoun and his staff will need at least a handful of players.

However, Kelly, who averaged 17 points and 10 boards at Rice as a junior, is expected to be the cornerstone.

Kelly is an elite talent who runs the floor, blocks shots and can score in the paint. He's long and athletic and holds the No. 16 spot in Scout.com's Class of 2006. His one weakness remains his tendency to take plays off.

According to Kelly, other schools in the mix were Syracuse, Georgia Tech, St. John's, Pittsburgh, Louisville and North Carolina.
