AAU Spotlight: Illinois Warriors

Larry Butler's Illinois Warriors are the defending AAU National Champions. Despite some heavy losses like Andre Iguodala, Rick Cornett and Aaron Spears, Butler seems to have reloaded and the 2002 Warriors should be a force on the AAU circuit.

Brown Leads 2002 Edition of Warriors

2001 was a great year for the Illinois Warriors. Larry Butler's group captured the AAU national title and put forth a Final Four showing at the Nike Peach Jam. Like every other AAU team in the country, the Warriors have lost some good players but Butler has another fine group coming in.

"Last year, we had a lot of matchup problems," Butler said. "This year, we'll be a little quicker. The great thing about this group is that we play together. The few guys we added on are really good team players. I'm real excited about this group."

Butler's marquee guy this season appears to be Proviso East standout shooting guard Shannon Brown. The 6-3 Brown ranks as one of the finest guards in the nation. He was stellar in helping the Warriors to the AAU title last July. Joining him in the starting backcourt will be East teammate Charlie Richardson. "Shannon is going to give us some of the things that Andre (Iguodala) gave us," Butler said.

On the wings is sharp shooter Collin Falls of Loyola Academy. Inside starters appear to be Mike Rembert and possible Jerald Hunter of Kennedy. Andre White, another guard, will factor prominently into the lineup.

Butler has nothing but high praise for Rembert. "He's going to be the surprise of the summer," Butler said. "He's skilled, he can score and he has a great feel for the game."
