Harangody To Play In Big East

Luke Harangody is off the board. Right before the beginning of the second phase of the month of July, the big fella pulled the trigger. He'll play in the Big East.

It came down to Notre Dame and Purdue and the Irish won out. Luke Harangody, a 6-foot-8 big man out of Merrillville (Ind.) Andrean, committed to play for Mike Brey's Fighting Irish on Wednesday night.

"I think it was the great education and I thought I'd be a good fit for the program," Harangody said. "I like the coaching staff a lot."

Harangody, 6-foot-8 and 245 pounds, took a pass on the camp and traveling team circuit this summer and he's not looking back. In fact, Harangody boosted his national profile with a series of outstanding performances this spring. He helped the SFY advance to the championship game of the Kingwood Classic.

At Notre Dame, Harangody will bring a strong presence to the Irish attack. He's excellent around the basket and takes care of his rebounding responsibilities. He's got a Big East-ready body.

"I think I can come in there and bring something different to the team," Harangody said. "I'll bring some rebounding to the team."

The commitment is Notre Dame's first in the Class of 2006. Harangody is ranked No. 52 in his class by Scout.com.
