Inside Word

How does New Mexico's firing of Fran Fraschilla impact their recruiting class? Where might Brian Morrison end up? And which coach is on Washington's short list? We look at these questions and more in our latest Inside Word...

Fran Fraschilla's resignation at New Mexico has Lobo fans wondering what, if any, impact that decision will have on the Lobo recruits who signed in the fall. We hear that David Chiotti, 6-8 PF Mountain View (Calif.) St. Francis, plans on sticking with his commitment. But that might not be the case with Ashanti Cook, 6-1 PG Los Angeles Westchester. We haven't heard anything definitive yet, but there is a possibility that Cook may ask to be released from his NLI. If that comes to pass, then don't be surprised if Oregon takes another run at Cook. Remember, the Ducks were on Cook's short list in the fall and he took a visit to the Oregon campus before committing to New Mexico.

Speaking of Oregon, we hear they may also be in the running for North Carolina transfer Brian Morrison. The Ducks up-tempo, run and gun system would seem to be well-suited for the athletic Morrison as he's at his best in an open-court game.

Washington is also rumored to be interested in Morrison as well, but the Huskies will need to hire a new coach before they can make any personnel decisions. We hear that Quin Snyder will be on UW's short list and he figures to be contacted about the job once Missouri is eliminated from the NCAA tournament.Snyder is a Washington native and it wouldn't be a surprise if he accepts an offer from the Pac-10 school.

In other coaching news, we hear that Irvine's Pat Douglass is probably the leader for the Fresno St. job. Douglass has done an incredible job of rebuilding the Irvine program in just a few years and he would seem to be a good fit for the Fresno job. If Douglass were to get the job, look for Irvine assistant Todd Lee to be named head coach of the Anteaters.

Finally, we hear that Oregon St. transferee Jimmy Haywood is probably going to end up at Portland. Haywood will have to sit out for a year and then he'll have one more year to play.
