Slaughter To The Sun Belt

Basketball runs in A.J. Slaughter's family. With a sister at Louisville and a father who played collegiately, it's no surprise Slaughter is headed to a prime mid-major spot himself.

The Slaughter Family will have two collegians playing in the state of Kentucky in the winter of 2006. Toni Slaughter is a guard for the Louisville women's team and her brother, A.J. Slaughter, will be a freshman at Western Kentucky in the fall of 2006.

On Thursday, one of the top players in the state of Kentucky picked the Hilltoppers.

"He really liked Western's coaching staff, Shelbyville Co. head coach Mike Clark said. "They did a great job of recruiting him. He liked the tradition of their program and in general liked the school."

Last season, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 18 points a game while shooting a sweet 48% from behind the arc. He chipped in with 6 steals and 5 assists. West Virginia and Vanderbilt showed interest as well as a host of OVC programs.

"For us, he's a combo guard," Clark said. "Early on in his career he played the point for us. Once our other guard got himself ready to play we were able to move A.J. to the two. He can score the ball well. He can really get to the basket."

Slaughter was Western Kentucky's top wing target in the Class of 2006. He attended Western's team camp back in June.
