Gerard Punch, 6-3 SG Phoenix (Ariz.) Brophy Prep, is a very good athlete who has cleaned up both his shot and his ball handling since we saw him last spring. His stroke is much smoother than before and he showed three-point range this past weekend in Las Vegas. The shots didn't always go down, but we think he has a considerable upside and the potential to emerge in the summer as a high major recruit.
We spoke with Gerard in Vegas and he told us his early list of schools includes Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Stanford and Notre Dame. "Arizona was the school I really liked growing up," Punch said.
Location doesn't figure to play a role in his decision, according to Punch. "I don't care that," Punch said. "I'll be looking at the existing roster and what kind of playing time there might be. It doesn't have to necessarily be a starting spot, but some time would be good.'
We asked if he had thought about the level he'd like to play at and Punch replied, "I want to play at the highest level possible -- that's how you get better."
Punch said that he still wants to improve his ball handling and his shooting. "Those are the areas I need to work on," Punch said.
Punch told us that he has a GPA of 3.0 and he'll take the SAT next month.
