Leonard Washington "Lucky"

Leonard Washington knows that he and his family were fortunate to avoid Hurricane Katrina last week. While he tries to reach his Louisiana Select teammates that hail from New Orleans, he's also trying to pick up a new sport.

Leonard Washington was fortunate. He and his family, who live about four hours away from New Orleans in Lake Charles, La., escaped Hurricane Katrina.

``We just got rain here," said the 6-foot-6, 215-pound junior. "I was worried. We're very lucky that it didn't come this way."

Washington (Scout.com, No. 39) said he's still been unable to contact his Louisiana Select teammates Demond Carter and Kevin Branch to find out how they are their families are doing after the devastation that hit New Orleans last week.

For now, Washington is focusing on his "other" sport. He recently decided to take up football for the first time since high school. He caught a pair of passes in his first game this past weekend and is also the team's backup quarterback.

Washington said that Notre Dame is the newest school to try and get involved in his recruitment, but his leaders are Colorado State, Georgia Tech, Texas, Florida, LSU and Mississippi State.
