Dewhurst Finds A New Home Close To Home

The Charlotte 49ers have it cooking right now. Bobby Lutz's crew is taking commitments on a daily basis and this time they didn't venture far from campus for their latest pledge.

Charles Dewhurst, a 6-foot-5 small forward out of Charlotte Latin in North Carolina, is headed to play for the Charlotte 49ers.

"Charles Dewhurst committed to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this morning," Latin coach Jerry Faulkner said. James Madison, Richmond and South Carolina comprised his final list of schools.

"South Carolina and Richmond wanted him to visit but Charles was dead set on UNC-Charlotte, he just didn't waste any time," Faulkner said.

Last season, the athletic wing averaged 20.6 points and 9 boards. He shot 75% from the line and 54% from the field.

Inevitably, the comparisons between Dewhurst and former 49er standout Joby Thomas are bound to come up.

"That's what Bobby and Benny (Moss) have said all along in the recruitment of him," Faulkner said. "Joby was certainly a long range shooter and that's not one of Charles' strengths, by that I mean long range. When Joby crossed halfcourt he was in range. Charles can shoot the 3 but he's not a long range bomber. I think Charles is the better athlete."

Charlotte now owns commitments from wings Dewhurst and Cameron Tatum to go with juco point Carlos Williams. Looking further down the road, the 49ers have Michael Beasley ( No. 2) and Kenyan Harmon from the Class of 2007.
