"Charles Dewhurst committed to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this morning," Latin coach Jerry Faulkner said. James Madison, Richmond and South Carolina comprised his final list of schools.
"South Carolina and Richmond wanted him to visit but Charles was dead set on UNC-Charlotte, he just didn't waste any time," Faulkner said.
Last season, the athletic wing averaged 20.6 points and 9 boards. He shot 75% from the line and 54% from the field.
Inevitably, the comparisons between Dewhurst and former 49er standout Joby Thomas are bound to come up.
"That's what Bobby and Benny (Moss) have said all along in the recruitment of him," Faulkner said. "Joby was certainly a long range shooter and that's not one of Charles' strengths, by that I mean long range. When Joby crossed halfcourt he was in range. Charles can shoot the 3 but he's not a long range bomber. I think Charles is the better athlete."
Charlotte now owns commitments from wings Dewhurst and Cameron Tatum to go with juco point Carlos Williams. Looking further down the road, the 49ers have Michael Beasley (Scout.com No. 2) and Kenyan Harmon from the Class of 2007.
