John Ziri Makes An Impression

John Ziri came into the Pump tournament pretty much unknown outside of Arizona. But his play drew the attention of several coaches and we spoke with him about his recruitment...

John Ziri, 6-1 PG Tempe (Ariz.) Marcos de Niza, was a very pleasant surprise for us this past weekend in Las Vegas. More of a combo than a pure point, Ziri showed good quicks and hops, a fairly good outside shot and  he played with great intensity. We want to see him some more, but he appears to have a good chance of playing at a mid major or higher.

We spoke with Ziri after one of his games and he told us the two schools that have been showing interest so far are Northern Arizona and South Alabama. He mentioned Arizona St. as a school that he particularly admired while growing up.

Ziri told us that location won't play a role in his decision. "No, that doesn't really matter," Ziri said. "My relationship with the coaching staff will be the big thing." When we asked about the importance of early playing time, Ziri replied, "No, that's not an issue." Ziri also told us that he hopes to make a fairly early decision.

This past season, Ziri averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds a game. He said he has a 2.7 GPA and he'll take the SAT in May.
