Azubuike Picks Wildcats

The saga of Kelenna Azubuike will end today, according to his high school coach. The Oklahoman will sign his letter of intent to play in the Southeastern Conference.

Azubuike Picks Kentucky

At the beginning of the week, the equation became crystal clear: Kelenna Azubuike, a 6-5 small forward from Tulsa, Okla., was heading to Kentucky.

On Monday, his No. 2 school Illinois, gave its final scholarship to Aaron Spears. That meant No. 1 Kentucky's position was only strengthened. Actually, it was strengthened a few days earlier.

Last week, Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith was in Azubuike's home for an extended visit. "He was in their home from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.," Victory Christian coach Joe Mercier said. "That's quite unusual. He's looking for kids with great character and integrity and also great basketball players. That was attractive to Kelenna."

Mercier says he expects his star to sign with Kentucky today. "As far as I know, he's going to sign with Kentucky today. He's in Washington, D.C. He's flying to Louisville on Friday and playing in the Derby Classic on Saturday at Freedom Hall."
