Lawrence Westbrook Off Board

Lawrence Westbrook has known where he's wanted to go for a long time - mostly because of his relationship with the coach. Now, it appears that it's a done deal for the 6-foot Winchendon (Mass.) scoring guard.

Lawrence Westbrook's father grew up in Massachusetts and has had a connection with John Calipari since his days coaching at UMass, so it's only natural that the 6-foot, 190-pound scoring point guard is headed to Memphis.

``I've known Coach Cal for a while," Westbrook said. "I didn't really have to give them a commitment. We're like family."

``We told them a long time ago I wanted to go there," he added.

``The first time he saw me play was two summers ago against Shawn Taggert and I had 41 points," Westbrook continued.

Westbrook led the nation in scoring at Chandler High (Ariz.) last year, but opted to take this season in the prep ranks at Winchendon (Mass.).

``It's a lot different here, but Coach (Mike) Byrnes is a really good coach. I really like him a lot – he's one of the best coaches I've had. I also really like the guys on the team; we all hang out."

``I might not average 41 points here, but I am definitely going to have 40-point games," he added. "Coach Byrnes is telling me to shoot the ball and when the coach tells me that, I have confidence."

Westbrook was more than content with his performance this spring and summer.

``I thought I had a great summer," he said. "I proved that I can score and pass. Last year I played two-guard 95 percent of the time; this year I played it about 60 percent of the time. The first game at Kingwood I scored 40 points and had 10 assists and the next game I had 45 points and 9 assists. I proved to everyone I could pass the ball."
