The Rhode Island Hawks got some bang for their buck when they received a commitment from junior college power forward Joe Mbang (pronounced Bang).
likes tough, hard-nosed guys who get after it. That's one of the primary reasons he wanted Monroe Community College (N.Y.) sophomore power forward Joe Mbang
Mbang is a guy in the Eric Hicks or Jason Maxiell mold. He's a big-time athlete who hails from Cameroon and plays full throttle.
``He's tremendously athletic," Monroe assistant coach Rob Schoener said. "Athletically, he's up there with anybody."
Mbang averaged 13 points and a team-high 9 rebounds as a freshman in junior college last season as Monroe finished 31-5 and made it to the elite eight.
``His jump shot is rapidly improving and I think he'll shoot it very well at the next level," added Schoener. "But he's a tremendous rebounder and shot-blocker."
Mbang was also considering UNLV, St. Bonaventure and Akron. Georgia and Maryland also expressed interest.
``He really hit it off with Coach Baron," Schoener said. "Plus, he fell in love with the campus."
