Matt Parker, a 6-foot-8 power forward with face-up skills, selected the Dukes over Winthrop.
"After the official visit I was ready to commit," Parker said. "My mom wanted me to look at another school because I hadn't seen anyone else. I like Winthrop but I had to go with my gut."
The native of N.C., averaged 14 points a game for Statesville Christian as a junior. "I think I'll play (early)," Parker said. "I've played with their guys but I think my freshman year I can come in and get some playing time. I should be contributing right away in the post."
Parker was impressed as he felt all along that he was JMU's No. 1 target at his position.
"Coach Keener said that he was going to give me time to make a decision but they had another guy that wanted to come. We were the same type players but said that I was their No. 1 guy. Then, I told them that was the best place for me. That's where I wanted to go."
