Jonathan Mitchell Heading South

Jonathan Mitchell made his decision this past weekend while on his third official visit. The Mount Vernon High (N.Y.) senior forward will be heading south for college.

Jonathan Mitchell didn't waste any time while on his visit to Florida. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound combo forward committed to the Gators, who many observers felt was a distant third for much of the Mount Vernon (N.Y.) star's recruitment.

Mitchell committed to Billy Donovan and his staff on Sunday shortly after finishing his official visit. Mitchell had previously visited Marquette and Virginia.

``I knew when I was there that it was the place for me; it was in my heart," Mitchell told the Journal News. "The trip down there sealed it. I came back and thought about it for a while today and I knew my decision was made."

Mitchell became the first eighth-grader to play varsity at Mount Vernon, one of the top high school program's in the country, four years ago. Mitchell averaged 18.1 points and 10 boards per game last season.

``Jonathan didn't want to get stuck being a low-post player in college," Mount Vernon coach Bob Cimmino told the Journal News. "Florida was recruiting him in the spring strictly as a (power forward) and backed off because they had a plethora of talent at that spot. Then they saw him at an AAU tournament and he shot the eyes out of the place. They got back, admittedly late, but did a great job of recruiting him."
