Western Carolina Loading Up

Don't look now but the Western Carolina Catamounts are getting it done on the recruiting trail. New coach Larry Hunter scored his third consecutive highly regarded mid-major player this week.

Western Carolina has big aspirations for the future and the recruiting class its putting together will eventually fuel the expectations for the Southern Conference team.

Earlier this week, South Webster (Ohio) High power forward Nick Aldridge picked the Catamounts after strongly considering Winthrop and a host of other programs. You may recall that Aldridge was at one time committed to Cincinnati prior to the departure of Bob

Meanwhile, down in Cullowhee, Hunter is leaning on some strong relationships as he puts together his recruiting class.

"I think that Nick really hit it off with the coaching staff there," South Webster Coach Mark Kreischer said. "They're from the area and knew the area and knew a lot about Nick. He really just connected with the staff and Coach Hunter is going to get it done there."

Aldridge joins Omar Thomas and Brandon Giles in the current 3-man class. Aldridge, as a junior, scored 27 points a game while hauling in 10.2 boards to go with 3 assists.

The prospect was impressed by the level of player Hunter was bringing into the program. "The guys they brought in are mid-major plus guys and that really appealed to Nick," Kreischer said.

"The coaches were very straight up with me," Aldridge said. "They said they haven't been good in the past but they said they wanted to get players in and take it to the next level as far as the NCAA Tournament. They've got a good class and we expect big things as well."
