Budinger is the two-sport star who is headed to Arizona to play hoops after his senior season at La Costa Canyon (Calif.) concludes. Shelley, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound junior at Crawford High (Calif.), will then take his turn as "the man" in the area.
``There aren't that many really good players in the area right now," Shelley said. "It's really just me and Chase. We've got a lot of young talent, though. It's kind of hard growing up in San Diego because everyone in L.A. gets all the attention."
Shelley, who put up 27.5 points, 13 boards, 4.5 assists and 3.5 blocks per game as a sophomore, will get his share before all is said and done.
He's a big-time athlete who gets to the basket and has the strength and body control to finish. He'll still need to improve the consistency on his outside jumper.
``I got a lot of exposure, but I didn't like coming off the bench," he said.
Shelley, 18, has given up football after playing last season in order to focus all of his efforts on the hardwood. It doesn't seem like all that long ago that Shelley was cut from the Rising Stars team when he was 10 years old.
``I was horrible back then," he admitted.
``I want to go somewhere I can play as a freshman," Shelley said.
