Tron Smith's Stock is Rising

Tron Smith, a 6-1 point guard from Canyon Springs, was one of the standout players in the Rockfish Spring League and he was also terrific in the Pump Easter Tournament. Two high majors have offered and they are the leaders at this time for Smith...

You won't find his name on any Top 100 national lists, but we're confident you'll see Tron Smith, 6-1 JR PG Moreno Valley (Calif.) Canyon Springs, on some lists after July. Currently ranked #6 among PGs in the west, Smith will almost certainly move into the top four when we update our rankings in June.

More of a 1/2 than pure point guard, Smith has shown steady improvement since last summer and he's been particularly impressive in the spring events. A terrific athlete, with a great build and big hops, Smith is also a very good shooter. He gets great elevation on his shot and his release is as pure as any guard's in the west. If you play him for the jumper, Smith has the quickness to get to the rim and the strength to finish strong.

We spoke with Smith last weekend and he told us his two leaders are Arizona St. and Boston College. "ASU offered last week," Smith said. "And Boston College just offered."

Smith told us he's also considering Miami (Fla.), but he made it sound like ASU and Boston College were the two frontrunners. We asked for his thoughts on ASU and Boston College. "Boston College runs most of their stuff through the guards, while ASU uses both their guards and big men," Smith said. "Jason Braxton (ASU freshman) is one of my best friends and he wants me to play with him. It'd be good, because we both know each other so well, how we play and we could help each other out."

Smith told us he'd like to make a fairly early decision, possibly before the ABCD camp in July. He said he has a 2.8 GPA and he'll take the SAT and ACT in June.
