Freeman To Pick From Four

When Wednesday rolls around many of the nation's top high school seniors will take out their letters of intent and put a pen to the paper. They'll be joined by junior Austin Freeman who isn't signing but will commit the same day.

For Austin Freeman, the beginning of the early signing period for seniors will take on another meaning. On Nov. 9, the nation's No. 24 junior will announce his decision.

"He's actually going to announce on Wednesday," DeMatha Catholic coach Mike Jones said. "It'll coincide with Nigel Munson signing his letter to Virginia Tech."

The announcement by the 6-foot-4 shooting guard who is's No. 24 junior will make one program extremely happy. Last year, the versatile and effective Freeman shot 60% from the field while leading the Stags in scoring.

According to Jones, the final four are North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Georgetown and Maryland.

"He and his family both just got tired of the calls and the mail," Jones said. "I think he felt a little distracted. He wants to get it over with so he can concentrate on his game and his schoolwork."

Last weekend Freeman took an unofficial visit to South Bend. "He was at Notre Dame this past weekend and really enjoyed it," Jones said. "He was at N.C. State the weekend before that and really enjoyed it."

Will he stay close to home or leave the area? That's the question on the minds of the schools chasing him.
