Ibekwe Heating Up

Ekene Ibekwe, 6-9 JR PF, Carson (Calif.) High, will take his first official visit this weekend – to Arizona.

But Arizona could be in for some stiffening competition. Ibekwe is seeing his recruitment pick up as a result of two good performances in recent tournaments.

Ibekwe played well in the Kindswood Classic in Texas two weeks ago and, as a result, had more college coaches visit him during the contact period that just ended yesterday (Wednesday).

In the last two weeks, coaches from Maryland, Georgia, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina and UNLV came to visit Ibekwe and his family. USC and UCLA have been out to seem him many times before. Among the head coaches that made personal appearances in the last couple of weeks were Lute Olson, Matt Doherty and Charlie Spoonhauer.

Ibekwe will visit Arizona after he takes the SAT on Saturday. He has taken the SAT before (it's required to take an official visit), but is making another attempt.

Ibekwe insists he's still wide open, but Arizona is definitely one of his five finalists. Speculation is that USC, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas and UCLA are among the others that could get visits.

UCLA is considering offering Ibekwe's older brother, Onye Ibekwe, 6-6 SR PF, Los Angeles Crenshaw, which could help their chances with Ekene. There is also a possibility that Onye could walk on to UCLA.
