2007 Focus: Tyler Bernardini

Tyler Bernardini, an intriguing wing from Southern California, has a couple Pac-10 programs, among others, involved early in his recruitment...

Tyler Bernardini, 6-5 JR SF San Diego (Calif.) Francis Parker, is a rangy wing with a nice stroke to the stripe. We were very impressed with him at our last viewing in July and think he has a chance to emerge as one of the better wings in this class.

We spoke with Bernardini last night and asked him about his recruitment so far.

"I'm really open right now," said Bernardini. "Some of the schools I've heard from are San Diego State – they've offered – and Stanford has been down to my school twice. They want me to see some of their games this year and talked about maybe having me come up when they play USC or UCLA. Santa Clara wants me to come to their game against UC Irvine and they may come to my school on Monday."

Several other schools are also expressing interest in Bernardini.

"Utah has scheduled a visit to come to my school, but they talked to my coach and I don't know the date," said Bernardini. "New Mexico has been to my school. I've talked with Richmond and Tulsa, and Tulsa said they'll be coming to my school. Washington State is supposed to come down around December 10th. Long Beach State and Pepperdine are also showing a lot of interest. Pepperdine asked me to take an unofficial, but my Mom got sick and I had to reschedule."

We asked Bernardini what he is looking for in a school.

"First of all, the overall basketball program and the types of kids they have in their program," said Bernardini. "Academics are obviously very important – I'm looking beyond basketball. The area isn't real important to me, but I would like to go somewhere where I might be able to get some early minutes. Not necessarily starting, but someplace where I can get some time and maybe work my way into more minutes."

When asked about the timing of his decision, Bernardini said, "I'm focusing on the season right now, but if I had enough options that I felt good about, I could make a decision before the summer. I would like to get it done. But if not, I'll play through the summer and definitely sign before my senior year."

An excellent student, Bernardini told us he has a 3.8 GPA and he's already scored a 1720 on the SAT.
