Last weekend, two of the finest guards in Chi-Town laced them up and Sherron Collins' Crane squad bested Jerome Randle's boys from Hales Franciscan 88-73. Randle was the high-scorer with 32 while Collins dropped 24, 8 boards and 3 assists. Unfortunately for Hales, they followed up the loss with another setback Tuesday night as they fell to Fenwick 67-62. Randle had 26 in that one.
David Lighty made his return to the hardwood after last year's knee injury Friday night. The OSU signee scored 19 points as Villa Angela-St. Joseph's defeated Euclid in overtime. Lighty took 9 months to recover from an ACL tear before making his return. 2,000 fans took in the game.
What a week its been for Chase Budinger. The LaCosta Canyon stud wing player scored 48 points at the St. Louis Shootout but that figured to be just his second-highest total in the last 7 days. On Monday evening, Budinger dropped 49 points in his team's 86-83 win over El Camino.
A matchup of Top 100 power forwards had more hype than substance as Wayne Chism and Bolivar defeated Haywood and Jarvis Varnado 51-41. According to the newspaper, Chism scored 10 points and Varnado was limited to just 7; Chism is going to Tennessee while Varnado signed with Mississippi State.
Illinois recruit Richard Semrau had a strong performance. The face up forward hit the double-double in Lutheran West's 61-57 win over St. Peter Chanel. Semrau hit for 25 points and 16 rebounds. The victory was Lutheran West's 29th straight regular season win.
Future Spartan Tom Herzog turned in a strong offensive game. Flint Powers overpowered Flint Northern 80-58. The 7-foot Herzog dropped in 24 points for the winning side.
Unsigned senior guard Leon Freeman went off Tuesday night. The Belleville High shooting guard spearheaded his team's 22-point win over Wayne. Freeman dropped 27 points and 10 rebounds as his team improved to 1-1.
Bryce Webster wasn't around for the end of St. Thomas's 57-32 win over Fridley. The future Gopher left the contest with a sprained ankle after scoring 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Episcopal Academy rolled Tuesday night in a 59-31 win over West Catholic. Gerald Henderson, one of the Top 20 seniors in America and a future Duke Blue Devil, led the charge with a game-high 18 points.
Spencer Hawes was done in by an AAU teammate. Seattle Prep lost to O'Dea as Jamelle McMillan celebrated a return to the O'Dea lineup by connecting on a controversial floater with 1.8 seconds remaining in the game. It was McMillan's first game back since returning from a stress fracture in his right foot. The 6-foot-11 Hawes recorded 25 points and 13 rebounds.
William Graves and Greensboro Dudley jumped all over Rockingham County. Graves and Co. rung up 96 points while holding its opponent to 36 as the team improved to 4-0. Graves scored a game-high 23 points.
Jerryd Bayless posted one of the highest scoring totals of the high school season Tuesday night. In St. Mary's 83-72 win over Marcos DeNiza, Bayless went off for 53 points. The Arizona commitment connected on 5 3-pointers and scratched 14-of-17 from the free throw line.
Darquavis Tucker and Saginaw Arthur Hill didn't have it going in the first half against Lathrup. Then, Arthur Hill began pouring it on and dumped Lathrup 84-66 behind 22 points from Tucker. The 6-foot-4 junior small forward scored 15 second half points.
Corperrayle Harris, a junior guard, helped Redford rock Cody 82-49. Harris had a monster game as he posted 28 points and 21 rebounds.
Isaiah Thomas' strong junior season continued as Curtis – once again – had little problem with an opponent. Curtis took apart Beamer 71-41 as Thomas went off for 35 points.
Chris Wright didn't play his type of ball game until it mattered. With his team on the verge of losing to Paul VI, Wright scored 7 points in the final 52 seconds of the contest. St. John's is now 4-0 and Wright scored a dozen points.
Junior guard Kyle Griffin scored 28 points but it wasn't enough as Germantown Academy fell 75-68 to Friends Central. Griffin's teammate, Villanova signee Andrew Ott, chipped in with 12 points of his own.
Late last week, Chicago Simeon and Derrick Rose had a special visitor in town. Kobe Bryant stopped by school for a visit and a day later, Rose led Simeon past Thornton 63-57. The top-rated junior guard hit for 20 points.
There's a new name on the southern recruiting map. Ed Davis, the sophomore son of a former NBA player, scored 27 points, had 12 rebounds and 7 blocks in Richmond (Va.) Hanover's loss Tuesday evening. Highland Springs defeated Hanover 72-63. Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg was in attendance scouting Davis who is averaging 14.2 points on the season.
Paul Williams is having a nice season at Detroit Renaissance. Tajuan Porter is the team's leader and led them in scoring with 22 in the 60-35 win over Henry Ford. Williams came to play and hit for 17 points of his own.
Travis Releford had another big time effort Monday night. In an overtime loss to Paseo by 4, the 6-foot-4 guard hit for 31 points. He was also credited with 21 rebounds. Rahmon Fletcher led Paseo with 36 points of his own.
A pair of talented underclassmen were on display in Minneapolis Tuesday night. Sophomore Anthony Tucker, a wing out of Minnetonka High, led the victory over Sibley, 87-82. Tucker hit for 38 points in the win. Sibley junior Trevor Mbakwe led Sibley with 31 points.
Puerto Rican Victor Davila continues to make a name for himself in the state of North Carolina. The power forward out of Starmount scored 18 points in his team's 66-45 victory over Surrey Central.
Thaddeus Young, according to reports, is going to miss the next 2-3 weeks. The 6-foot-8 Memphis Mitchell star has a right ankle injury. He sat out his team's loss last weekend as Hamilton and Joe Watkins bested Mitchell 106-95. Watkins scored 19 for the winners. … Duke Crews had surgery on his hand to repair a broken thumb. No date has been set for his return. … Last week, Scott Reynolds became the all-time leading scorer at Herndon High. Reynolds has 1,497 career points and needed just one quarter into his senior season to set the mark. …
Larry Wright and Saginaw played Tuesday evening with Saginaw beating Traverse City. St. John's assistant coach Fred Quartlebaum was in attendance watching Wright. Meanwhile, Tom Izzo and Tubby Smith made the trip to see junior big man Josh Southern. …
