2007's Lucas Makes His Pick

After speaking with Kalin Lucas a month ago, there was a hint of a potential commitment. On Thursday night, the commitment came to fruition as Lucas offered up a verbal pledge to one of the nation's heavy hitters.

On Thursday evening, Kalin Lucas dialed up Tom Izzo and ended his recruitment by selecting the Spartans of Michigan State over the Michigan Wolverines.

Lucas, a 6-foot junior point guard out of Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's, is Scout.com's No. 23 prospect overall in the junior class and No. 4 point guard. His pledge to Michigan State is a significant beginning to the Spartans 2007 recruiting efforts.

"I didn't see any reason for me to wait," Lucas said. "I figured I'd just go ahead and do it right now."

Lucas, an unselfish, team-oriented prospect who models his game after Chris Paul in terms of his mannerisms and approach to the game, couldn't say "no" to Tom Izzo.

"Coach Izzo is a man of his word," Lucas said. "He's a great person and every time I went up there he convinced me and my parents. I love him and he's a great person."

There's a race for the talent in the state of Michigan. The Wolverines landed Alex Legion this fall and now the Spartans picked up their initial commitment from the outstanding crop of juniors in the state. Of course Lucas is going to do his part to help the Spartans.

"I think with me already committing that I can help them with Durrell Summers and Josh Southern. I think those guys might want to play me."

Lucas, one of the top performers at last summer's Hoop Jamboree, trimmed his list to the Spartans and Wolverines and showed interest in Wake Forest before ending the process. He sees himself as a guy that'll fit right into MSU's style of play.

"I'm going to bring the ability to push the ball up the floor. I think I do that really big and that's what Michigan State does. I get my teammates involved."
