Carter Joins Williams, Wilson In Champaign
First there was Kyle Wilson. Deron Williams followed him. Now, Warren Carter is Illinois-bound in the fall of 2003. Carter committed to Illinois on Tuesday.
"I'm sure part of its kind of coincidence but there have been some really good players here," Lake Highlands head coach Rob Wiley said. Now, a lot of those players are making their way to Champaign.
The 6-8 ½ Carter averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks as a junior at Lake Highlands. SMU, Baylor, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Texas had expressed interest in him.
"We think he's got the chance to be a really good player," Wiley said. "He's just now starting to figure out how to play with all the ins and outs of the game. We think he has a really good upside."
Having landed Wilson, Williams and now Carter, its clear Bill Self is enjoying those trips into the Lone Star State. He's got a fine tour guide in assistant Billy Gillispie, a native of Texas. "They worked him really hard," Wiley said. "Billy's got a tremendous charisma about him. He's a great guy, good coach and top-notch recruiter."
