It's Over, Smith Commits

Nolan Smith said on Wednesday evening he was close to committing. Who knew he'd wake up Thursday morning and make it official?

The Duke Blue Devils have acquired the services of the nation's 16th ranked prospect. Nolan Smith, a 6-foot-3 combo guard who averages 17 points for the Oak Hill Warriors, the nation's top-ranked team, committed to Duke over Louisville and Georgetown.

"He called Coach Pitino at 3 o'clock and informed him that he's going to Duke," Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said. "Coach wished him well. He talked to Duke this morning. He's committed."

Smith, the son of a former NBA standout, is shooting 62% from the floor and 81% from the line. His assist total is also up this season and stands at 7.4.

"He carried when Ty (Lawson) was out for 7 games and got us through that stretch," Smith said. "He accepts his role; he can score, not score and still has a big game. He does so many things on the floor for us and he'll guard the best player on the other team. He does what we ask him on offense."

Smith said that Duke, which came on strong in the last two months, was the place he felt most comfortable at.

"It's the environment," Nolan Smith said. "I just felt so much love from the coaching staff and everyone at Duke. They made me feel comfortable."
