SlamFest: Day One Rundown

RICHMOND, Va. – St. Benedict's delivered the goods Friday night at the SlamFest. Samardo Samuels, Duke Crews and Lance Thomas were the big digit guys.

Lance Thomas, PF, St. Benedict's – Exactly what you would expect out of the senior. Another workman-like 17-point, 13-rebound night which could have easily been 25 with a few more finishes inside. The unsigned senior got himself to the line 9 times, making 5 of them, and we know he's a better free throw marksman than that.

He'll be easily coachable in college and he's a communicator on the court. You have to respect his intensity and approach to the game.

Duke Crews (right), PF, Bethel – He's played a handful of games since surgery on his non-shooting hand kept him out of action. He's got a pin around his thumb but he's a tough kid so it looks worse than it is. He shot 9-for-12 from the floor with all of his makes coming at or through the rim. 23 points, 13 rebounds. If you like dunking, Duke's your man.

Jamar Abrams, SG, Highland Springs – He's a good looking prospect who is probably going to be the envy of a slew of mid-level programs. He's got nice size and is a long 6-foot-5. Wired to be a scorer, the lefty is a nice prospect. He's a tad married to working on the left side of the court but that's OK, he's a player and this was probably a below-average game for him: 11 points, 5-for-13 FG, 1-for-5 3's.

Samardo Samuels, PF/C, St. Benedicts – He's inching toward the magical 6-foot-9 mark and that's good news. He looks more nimble and agile than he did a few months ago and the young man has all kinds of tools. He's got soft mitts and the progress he's making is right on track with where he should be coming off a terrific summer. We had him with 18 points, 10 boards and trifecta of rejections.

Jeff Capel was front and center for Abrams as was Antwon Jackson of William & Mary. … Dave Leitao and assistant Rob Lanier were eyeballing Samardo Samuels. …

Head Coaches – Dave Leitao, UVa; Jeff Capel, VCU.

Assistant Coaches In The Gym – Virginia, Charleston Southern, William & Mary.

Eugene Harvey like Southern Cal and Rutgers and says Illinois and Florida are still recruiting him. … Jamar Abrams is hearing from VCU, W&M, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Richmond and Georgetown at this stage. …

Ebon Fife is a 6-foot-8 power forward out of Highland Springs. Apparently his academics need some boosting so he could wind up at a place like Fork Union or even a junior college. If he fills out and rounds out his skills, he'll make it to a D-I program. … Harvey could have had more than five assists but guys missed a few bunnies for him. …

Jamal McLean is going to be a player at Tulsa. He was averaging 17 and 7 before Crews returned and his touches went down. …
