Omar Wilkes, 6-4 JR SG Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola, was sick this past weekend at the Mats Madness tournament and consequently wasn't able to play up to his usual standards. One thing we did notice, though, is that Wilkes has gotten bigger. He's taller and he's also added a little muscle through weightlifting.
We spoke with Omar Sunday in Fresno and asked about the official visit he took to Kansas. "I loved it," Wilkes said. "They have a great staff, great players and there was a real camaraderie."
We asked for his thoughts on the possibility of going to school in an environment different than the one he grew up in. "I'd have no problem," Wilkes said. "It's good to get different experiences and try new things."
Wilkes doesn't plan on taking any more trips soon. "I want to see how the summer plays out," Wilkes said. "Then I'll take some trips in the fall and decide before my senior year."
Wilkes listed Stanford, Cal and Maryland as schools that he's considering visiting. "I won't visit USC or UCLA," Wilkes said. "I can go up there anytime."
When asked which schools came to Loyola to visit him during the contact period, Wilkes replied, "Kansas, Stanford and Cal." Wilkes said UCLA is still sending him letters, but didn't come to visit. "I don't know what's going on there," Wilkes said. "I haven't heard that much from them. They either think they have me in the bag or have no chance."
Wilkes said Kansas is the one school that has formally offered. "Kansas offered me," Wilkes said. "Some of the others have said there's a scholarship there for me if I want it."
