We spoke with Kyle Jeffers, 6-8 JR PF Santa Rosa (Calif.) Montgomery, at the Mats Madness tournament in Fresno and he told us that Cal is his early leader. "I like the academics, the potential of the team during my four years and I think I can contribute there," Jeffers said.
Jeffers took an unofficial visit to Cal in April. "It's a nice campus -- I like the view," Jeffers said. "I'll probably be looking at the business school or engineering."
Jeffers is a very intriguing prospect due to his size, agility and the fact that he appears to be just scratching the surface of his potential. His offensive game isn't there yet, but he's very active at both ends of the court. He's got very good hands and feet. He also appears to have received some coaching, as he has good fundamentals. He's pretty much unknown nationally because he didn't play AAU ball last summer.
In addition to Cal, Jeffers was visited during the contact period by Santa Clara and St. Mary's. Schools sending him mail include Colorado St., Utah, Oregon, Villanova and Maryland.
We asked Jeffers about his options if he decides not to go to Cal. "I'd like to stay in the west," Jeffers said. "I liked the Pac-10 growing up."
Jeffers said he wants to make a decision prior to his senior season. He said he has a 3.7 GPA and he'll take the SAT in June.
