Gani Lawal to ACC

Gani Lawal announced his intentions at a news conference on Thursday afternoon. The Norcross High (Ga.) junior forward is headed to the ACC.

It was almost a foregone conclusion that Gani Lawal was going to remain close to home. The Norcross High (Ga.) 6-foot-8, 205-pound junior forward did just that, when he committed to Georgia Tech during a news conference on Thursday afternoon.

``I'll continue my scholastic and athletic career at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia," Lawal said. "

Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt had made Lawal the priority ever since reeling in the top player in the state in the Class of 2006 – Southwest Atlanta Christian senior point guard Javaris Crittenton.

Lawal (Scout.com, No. 14), who plays for the Georgia Stars and boasts a 4.0 GPA, chose the Yellow Jackets over Wake Forest and Kentucky.

Lawal transferred in from Riverdale High prior to this season and is averaging 17 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

Hewitt is hoping that Lawal is in the Chris Bosh mold, a long, athletic frontcourt player who can block shots, step out and knock down shots from mid-range and also finish when he gets stronger.

``I weighed my options and just felt that there was no reason to prolong it," Lawal added.
