Soph Nelson Commits to Duke

Talented sophomore guard DeMarcus Nelson from Vallejo comes off an impressive spring and makes a very early commitment to the Blue Devils...

DeMarcus Nelson, 6-2 SO PG, Vallejo (Calif.) High, told the Durham Herald-Sun that he's going to Duke.

"The opportunity was there for me to attend one of the best academic and basketball schools in the country," Nelson said. "I felt comfortable with the school and with the coaching staff."

As a sophomore last year, he averaged 29 points a game. In landing him, the Blue Devils venture to California the first time since signing Chris Burgess who would later attend Utah.

Nelson, who averaged 29 points a game as a sophomore, had a big-time performance at the Kingwood Classic while playing for Belmont Shore/H Squad. Then, at last weekend's Tournament of Champions, which was held in North Carolina, he gunned down the Michigan Hurricanes, one of the best teams in the tournament, all by himself.
