Kitchen Open To 4 Schools

Derwin Kitchen, a former Florida Gator signee, has turned into one of the gems of the spring recruiting period. The 6-foot-3 native of Jacksonville has his list trimmed to four.

With the high school senior class having been picked over a long time ago, when a guy like Derwin Kitchen comes around it's a feeding frenzy. Kitchen, a former Top 100 guard who signed with Florida last year but did not qualify for admittance, has his release and now a list of 4 suitors.

"It's down to St. John's, Miami, Virginia Tech and Jacksonville," David Jones, Kitchen's traveling team coach told Scout.com.

"He's going to take visits. He's already set up visits to Virginia Tech this weekend and Miami the weekend after."

Jacksonville, the local school and mid-major on the list, is hanging on hoping to hit the lottery. "He doesn't have to take (a visit) to Jacksonville and St. John's is coming down this week to see him work out and they'll probably set another visit with then."

Jones says distance isn't an issue with his guard rather he'd like to see all the campuses before making his decision. Checking out the northern spots in winter is also on the guard's agenda.

"(Distance has) never been an issue before he can go away and be OK with that. He wants to take visits now and see what the weather is going to be like if he chooses to go up north somewhere.

"They're all neck and neck – Miami, St. John's and Virginia Tech. JU has been making some ground lately because of the proximity being so close. He goes over there and has some friends on the girls team so he goes and sees some games and watches the boys also."

Sounds like we're a month or so away from a decision from one of the best available players in the country. Kitchen was a star in 2005 at Raines High School where his former high school teammate Juwann James is on the verge of becoming the rookie of the year in the CAA.
