Johnson Holds Early Offers

Indianapolis has been churning out top prospects at an incredible rate lately. Just become Greg Oden won't be around next year doesn't mean the Midwestern well is dry. Check out JaJuan Johnson!

JaJuan Johnson, for a guy who played spot minutes on the varsity as a sophomore, isn't have a bad junior season at all. The 6-foot-10 power forward who made national news last summer during a camp run and circuit appearances with the Spiece Central Stars, is turning into a strong prospect.

"I'm developing still but I'm getting better," Johnson said. "From just playing this year – last year I didn't get to play much – I'm learning to be stronger with the ball and stuff like that. I'm learning what to do in certain situations."

He's learning at a pretty good rate. As a junior, Johnson is averaging 14.2 points and is one of the area's leading shot rejecters at 4.9 per game.

"Rebounding, shot blocking, I think (defensively) I can go against most of the players in this state. Usually I'm guarding a big guy and that's fine."

Colleges have taken notice. Purdue's Matt Painter has dropped in this season for some face time and the Boilermakers are one of many set to make a run at Johnson this spring.

Purdue, Xavier, Virginia, Wake Forest, Connecticut and Marquette have been steady. "Those are the main ones that have been calling a lot lately," Johnson said. Purdue, Xavier, Missouri, Butler, Indiana State, Ball State and Virginia have offered.

"I didn't know all these schools (would recruit me). At first I was surprised when it first happened but now I've kind of gotten a little used to it so I know what to expect."

Expect this: Johnson will continue to fill out physically and he'll become more confident as the spring and summer progress. Talent-wise he could work his way into Top 50 contention so don't be surprised when the big timers make their charge at him. Johnson indicated that he's interested in seeing who the new Indiana coach is and would have interest in the Hoosiers.
