Bridgton Repeats

Bridgton Academy (Maine) won its second straight Class A title on Sunday with a come-from-behind victory against Winchendon.

Repeat. That's exactly what Bridgton Academy (Maine) did on Sunday night with a 79-62 victory against Winchendon School (Mass.) in the NEPSAC Class A championship game.

Bridgton trailed Winchendon, 44-33, at the break – but came on strong in the second half and outscored Winchendon, 46-18, the rest of the way.

``This means a lot in light of how far this team needed to go since the beginning of the season," Bridgton coach Whit Lesure said. "They proved the season is a journey and how you finish is more important than how you start."

``We knew this year was going to be a wild ride," added Lesure.

Unsigned senior combo guard Keaton Grant earned MVP honors for his performance. Grant and St. John's-bound forward Qa'rraan Calhoun were both key for Bridgton.

``That was the best he's played all year," Lesure said of Calhoun. "He was a monster and was a presence all over the court in every way."

Bridgton finished the season 23-9 and got past Northfield Mount Hermon, Worcester Academy and Winchendon to claim the title for the second consecutive year. ``Coach (Lesure) said it was going to be hard to win back-to-back titles," Grant said. "But we played as a team and everyone contributed, especially in the second half. We locked down our defense and came out with the victory."
