"I think I need to improve on my shot blocking ability," Hickson said. "I block shots but I need to know when I leave my feet and stay on the ground. I need to work on my basketball IQ so I can be in the right spot. Some of that has to come naturally but you can learn from your mistakes too."
That kind of introspective look into his game is refreshing to hear because by all accounts, Hickson is a big timer with a bright future. By demonstrating a willingness to critically look at his game speaks volumes about who he is and where he can go as a player.
Speaking of where he can, Hickson has been quite tight-lipped about his college choices. "Right now I'm wide open. I'm not putting anybody ahead of anybody and I'm just trying to weigh my options. The main thing will be playing time where I can fit in at and the relationship I have with the coaches.
"Everybody is recruiting me hard. Everybody is doing the same thing. I just need to see where I'm going to fit in."
Hickson said droves of ACC and SEC head coaches are involved in his recruitment. Previously he's been linked to Alabama, Arizona, Auburn, Florida, Georgetown, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
Hickson said the in-state schools haven't been on him that hard. "Believe it or not, I'm not really being recruited by the in-state people in Georgia. I really don't know why."
While Hickson isn't about to discuss serious contenders for his services, he did allude to a time when he'll firm up his list. "I should be coming up with a list sometime in the spring or over the summer."
Once the AAU season begins, we'll be sure to report back with which head coaches are packing the stands front and center for this talented prospect.
