Mayhanne C-USA Bound

Johnny Mayhanne didn't have much of a national reputation until December. Now he's got the distinction of becoming the first Tulane recruit since Hurricane Katrina.

Johnny Mayhanne made a name for himself this past winter and now he's headed to Tulane.

The LeFlore High (Ala.) 6-foot-5 senior shooting guard gave a verbal commitment to Dave Dickerson and became the first recruit to commit to the Green Wave since Hurricane Katrina hit the city of New Orleans. ``He felt there is an opportunity to play right away," LeFlore coach Otis Hughley said. "It's a conference where he has the opportunity to make a statement to the world that they missed out."

Mayhanne, who averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds per game, also considered South Alabama and Jacksonville.

``There were other schools dangling from the perimeter, but he really liked Coach Dickerson and Tulane," Hughley added. "He's a big guard whose really going to surprise some people."
