Sooners Work Henry Pipeline

A "championship atmosphere" was one of the components that drew Lawrence McKenzie to the Big 12, in particular Oklahoma. Toss in the fact that another Minnesotan was on the Sooners roster and the decision makes a lot of sense.

Henry H.S. Reunion In Norman

Per what we reported yesterday, Patrick Henry point guard Lawrence McKenzie has committed to Oklahoma. McKenzie joins former Patrick Henry star Johnnie Gilbert in Norman.

"When you look at their situation, the only point guard they have is Quannas White and he's a senior," Larry McKenzie told "That allows the opportunity for him to come in and play right away."

In selecting Oklahoma, McKenzie declined offers from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Telling Minnesota might have been the toughest part. "I think that was an extremely tough decision for him," Larry McKenzie said of his son's choice. "Minnesota is an up and coming program. Part of that process was just trying to decipher whether or not what future offers Coach Monson might get and consider. That was a factor in our decision."

McKenzie also said that the family was close to former Minnesota assistant Art Prevost who is no longer with the team.

Wisconsin, on the other hand, landed a 2002 guard and just committed another from the Class of 2004. "I think Wisconsin, when they signed Marcettus [McGee] that probably had more to do with it [then the 200 addition]."

Last year, McKenzie averaged 14 points and 8 assists. He'll continue to travel with Team Minnesota and also attend ABCD in July.

"It was a championship atmosphere at Oklahoma and that was important," Larry McKenzie said.
