Westbrook Getting Close

Russell Westbrook, 6-2 SR SG Lawndale (Calif.) Leuzinger, has seen his recruitment take off after an outstanding senior year. Prior to this season, Westbrook was being recruited primarily at the mid major level. But Westbrook started generating a buzz among high major programs when he started out strong in some early tournaments in December.

Westbrook, the #2 rated shooting guard in the West Coast class of 2006, took official visits recently to Wake Forest and Miami. San Diego has been recruiting Westbrook for some time and Westbrook visited the Toreros this month as well. This past week, hometown school UCLA offered Westbrook a scholarship.

We spoke with Westbrook last night and asked about the status of his recruitment.

"I'm looking at Arizona State, UCLA and San Diego right now," said Westbrook. "Those are the final three."

Westbrook visited ASU this past weekend and we asked him how the trip went.

"It was real cool," said Westbrook. "They have nice facilities and good people there."

Westbrook told us that UCLA coaches Ben Howland and Kerry Keating visited him at his home yesterday.

"It was good," said Westbrook. "They mainly told me about the opportunity there. Farmar and Afflalo could leave and there is a chance for playing time."

When questioned about the factors he'll consider when making his choice, Westbrook said, "The coaching, how good the players are that they have and the playing time."

Westbrook told us he hasn't reached a decision yet, but plans on picking a school in the next couple days.
