West Pulls Upset of East
IMPORTANT: At USA Camp, they play four 12-minute quarters so the scoring stats for all games will look to be a little inflated. A 24-second shot clock is also implemented.
Sebastian Telfair drained an off-balance 3-pointer to tie the score at 114. Then, with four seconds remaining, Fred Washington scored his 20th point on a layin – one of many for the scrappy small forward – and the West handed the East an opening game loss.
In a nip and tuck affair, Telfair led all scorers with 25 points on 10-27 from the field. Teammate Will Sheridan gave the East 11 points and 10 rebounds. Art Bowers scored 16 points in what was the East team's best all-around offensive performance.
Meanwhile for the victors, Rodrick Stewart (8-20 FG) scored 20 and power forward Nick Fazekas hit for 19; most of which came in the first half. However, the West would have been toast without a stellar second half from center David Padgett. The big man scored 18 points and hauled in 14 rebounds to go along with 3 blocks.
Ayinde Ubaka gave the West a presence at the point and had a solid floor game.
For the East, Demetris Nichols can do no wrong in our mind. Here's a big time wing athlete with a jumpshot. However, his defense is right up there among the top wing defenders in his class.
NOTES – The alley toss of the early session came from Michael Nardi and was flushed by Sean Banks. The dunks shook the backboard loose from the connecting bolts. … We hear Utah really likes Fasekas. He was very good on Friday after looking below average in practice on Thursday. .… Chris Paul, one of the top PGs in the country, is finding himself at the shooting guard on the East Team. Telfair and Nardi are running the point but it shouldn't reflect on Paul's ability. The East players and coaches are more familiar with Nardi, thus he gets the nod at the point. Both Nardi and Paul need the ball in their hands to truly play their games. … We hear Derek Raivio committed to Gonzaga. …
