Coach Speaks On Jones' Visit

Michael Jones, one of the top perimeter players in the Class of 2003, recently returned from an unofficial visit to Maryland. Here's what his high school coach has to say about his recruitment and where things stand.

Coach Says Jones Hasn't Made Decision

Michael Jones, a shooting guard from Thayer Academy, recently visited Maryland.

"He just took an unofficial visit," Thayer Academy head coach Robin Dixon said. "He went to campus and talked to the academic people."

Obviously, since Jones made some pretty strong public comments about the Terps, there was speculation he might commit on his visit. "He has no interest in making [a commitment] at this point," Dixon said. "The kid is pretty much still where he was two months ago."

Dixon is referring to a school list that includes not only Maryland, but Boston College, UConn and Charlotte. Right now, trading places with the Terps might be a good idea for one of those schools.

"He definitely likes Maryland," Dixon said. "There's no question about that."

We asked the question of Dixon: is it fair to say Maryland leads? "At this point, I would probably say yes. I don't know how definitive that is. He likes Gary Williams and likes the program. He met some of the players and the academic people were solid.

"At this point, he hasn't made a decision yet. He's going to feel his way through and see what happens at the end of July. He wants to sit down with his folks and talk about it and go through July and relax. He hasn't made any decisions at this point. I know that he feels pretty strongly about Maryland but that could change."

Something is screaming: don't bet against the defending national champs on this one.
