Downey Transfers To South Carolina

Devan Downey, one of the nation's elite freshmen point guards, is headed home.

The South Carolina Gamecocks didn't get Devan Downey the first time around but they'll have him for three seasons on the return trip.

Downey, Cincinnati's best guard last season, left the Bearcats seeking a transfer and in the end, could not pass up a chance to get closer to home.

"His mom only got to see him play one time at Cincinnati," Dion Bethea, Downey's AAU coach told "This was an opportunity for her to see him play every home game."

After sitting out a season, South Carolina will have the services of a quick point guard who can shoot it and get into the paint. As a senior in 2005, Downey was's No. 5 rated point guard in the class.

In addition to South Carolina, he considered Mississippi and Florida.
